The Office of Mayor Olivia Chow is hiring a Legislative Affairs & Implementation Advisor to join our team. We are seeking an experienced relationship-builder who can dive deep into policy, and help make the Mayor’s vision a reality.

Reporting to the Director of Legislative Affairs and Implementation, the Legislative Affairs & Implementation Advisor is responsible for fostering and maintaining strong working relationships with Councillors, managing the flow of policy development through the Committee and Council cycle at City Hall, and seeing policy items through development to completion.

The Legislative Affairs & Implementation Advisor must be personable, able to digest and synthesize complex policy programs and political realities quickly, and arrive at solutions that advance the Mayor’s agenda of building a more caring, safe and affordable city.

Responsibilities

  • Fosters and maintains strong relationships with Members of Council
  • Working with Councillors and stakeholders, ensures the Mayor’s policy objectives are fully developed, addressed and implemented
  • Manages the Committee Cycle for assigned committees: monitoring agendas, tracking issues arising, synthesizing reports, collaborating with Councillors and City Staff, and drafting amendments as required
  • Acts as a liaison with City Staff to support implementation of the Mayor and Council’s policy directives
  • Coordinates across teams in the Mayor’s Office, ensuring all teams are apprised of issues coming to Committee and Council

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Personable, persuasive, and able to understand complex dynamics with a view to finding common ground
  • Adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with many competing priorities
  • People-person, who is comfortable navigating different opinions and finding common ground in order to develop coherent, actionable policy 
  • Politically astute and deeply familiar with municipal policy files, the legislative processes, political policy-making, and decision-making at City Hall
  • Experience working in the municipal political space is preferred
  • Experience working in a political office, particularly in government, is an asset
  • Experience working for an elected official is an asset
  • Experience working in customer service is an asset

Application Procedure & Employment 

Full-time indefinite contract for the duration of the term of office.

Salary band: $90,000 to $115,000.

Anticipated start date: Monday, May 13, 2024 (or sooner).

Location: In person work at Toronto City Hall. Available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
